MARLBOROUGH TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
Our Year 7 and 8 students attend the Marlborough Technology Centre in Blenheim every second Wednesday throughout the year to engage in the practical components of the Technology Curriculum.
The Centre is fully equipped to deliver all areas of the curriculum, including:
Materials Technology (textiles, wood, metal, and plastics)
Biotechnology
Food Technology
Media
Digital Technology
Over the two years students attend the Centre, every effort will be made to ensure they experience and participate in all technological areas.
Our Year 7–8 students in Nga Awa benefit from a broad range of sporting opportunities that support physical wellbeing, teamwork, and confidence. In addition to school-wide events such as athletics, cross country, swimming, and interschool competitions, our senior students also engage in specialised events. These include the annual Ki o Rahi tournament — a fast-paced, strategic Māori game that fosters agility, teamwork, and cultural connection, and an annual Orienteering/Rogaine event, where students compete alongside other Marlborough schools in a fun, challenging navigation course.
We also encourage participation in Fundamental Skills, a school-wide programme that continues to be emphasised in the senior years to support confident movement and coordination. A key event for our Year 8 girls is the Ignite Kōhine Maia Festival of Sport, run by Sport Tasman, which celebrates female participation in sport through a day of connection, inspiration, and physical activity.
These opportunities help build resilience, leadership, and a lifelong love of being active, while also fostering a strong sense of fair play and belonging.
And to top it off, our much-anticipated Staff vs Students netball and basketball games—an exciting and light-hearted tradition that brings the whole school community together in the spirit of fun, friendly competition, and celebration.
At Redwoodtown School, our Year 7-8 learners in the Nga Awa unit are offered rich and engaging Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) opportunities designed to extend learning beyond the four walls of the classroom.
A highlight for many students is our annual camp, where they take on physical and social challenges in a supportive and adventurous environment. These EOTC events help build a strong team culture, foster independence, and create lasting memories as our students grow into confident and connected contributors to their world.
Students in Nga Awa have access to a range of specialised programmes designed to challenge and extend their thinking. These include Future Problem Solving, where students tackle real-world global issues using critical and creative thinking frameworks; the Otago Problem Challenge, which tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving under pressure; and Science and Maths Badges, which allow students to explore topics of personal interest through independent, inquiry-based learning. These opportunities are ideal for students who thrive on challenge, enjoy thinking deeply, and are motivated to take their learning further.
